XXX Congress in Ecuador: Education and Technology for Sustainable Development and the Demands of the World of Work (1999)

Year:

1999

Objective:

The Executive Committee of FIFyA established as the objective of the XXX Congress: “To advance towards the integration of a conceptual-“theoretical framework, strategic guidelines and concrete proposals, on how Fe y Alegría can incorporate/strengthen the dimension of technological education in its Educational Proposal.”

Background:

One of the challenges for the 21st century, identified at the Workshop Seminar on “Institutional Strengthening of the Federation of Fe y Alegría”, held in 1998 in Lima, Peru, was: “To recreate the humanist and integral educational proposal of Fe y Alegría, linking it to the technological challenges and to the changing demands of the world of work and cultures in the global society, contributing to sustainable development”. That is why the XIII Assembly of the International Federation of Fe y Alegría, held at the conclusion of the Seminar-Workshop, selected as the theme of the XXX Congress of FIFyA the topic “Education and Technology for a Sustainable Development and the demands of the world of work”.

With this theme, the Assembly intended to deepen the reflection on the implications of the changes in the economic-productive processes and the labour markets, as a consequence of technological innovation, in the orientation of Fe y Alegría’s Training for Work, Job Training and Technical-Professional Education programmes. The aim was to approach the subject from the perspective of the demands of an authentic quality Popular Education, in the spirit of Fe y Alegría’s ideology, which responds to the challenges of the “technological culture” that drives an increasingly globalised world, without losing sight of the values of traditional cultures or the role of education as a factor of social change for the promotion of sustainable development processes.

The Congress:

The theme was approached from the demands of an authentic quality Popular Education, in the spirit of the Fe y Alegría Ideology, seeking to respond to the challenges of the “technological culture” that moves an increasingly globalised world, but without losing sight of the values of traditional cultures, nor the role of education as a factor of social change for the promotion of sustainable development processes. It also reflected on the implications of the changes in economic-productive processes and labour markets, as a result of technological innovation, on the orientation of our programmes of Training for Work, Job Training and Technical-Professional Education.

This International Congress is a further step in an effort to build a “humanistic and integral” Proposal for Popular Education and Social Promotion, linking it to the technological challenges and the changing demands of the world of work and cultures in the global society, contributing to sustainable development.”.
